His mind was paddling at top speed #mfrwhooks

I hope you are all well and taking adequate precautions (whatever ‘adequate’ means these days). Stay safe, ladies!

In these snippets from my sci fi rom, Alien Contact for Kid Sisters, Marianne met Quinn Lebatarde, wearing Captain Charleyjohn’s Royal Guardian uniform. For safety from a rebel attack, they’re in one of the many tunnels that honeycomb Kwadra Island. Charleyjohn is supposed to be her bodyguard.

If you remember from last week’s post, Quinn showed his heroic side by springing into action against an intruder — only to be kicked by the ‘intruder’, an eleven-year-old girl who is a cousin of the king. Nonetheless, the con man continues to have heroic thoughts . . . for the moment, at least.

Quinn watched the Harmon woman soothe and pet the royal brat. Somewhat to his surprise, he wasn’t overawed by such highborn company. In fact, within seconds, his mind was paddling at top speed, trying to figure out what to do.

The long term, like tomorrow or the next day, eluded him. It frequently did; he needed to work on that. For right now, though, the obvious goal was to get them as far away from here as possible.

He didn’t know what was going on up there. Full scale rebellion, for all he knew, with fighting in the streets, and he needed to protect Marianne from that. Spirits knew such a classy klootch deserved a better defender than someone like him, but wearing a Guardian’s uniform made him feel up to the task.

What about the little girl with the vicious boots, though? A taste of hardship might do her good.

Ah well, she was just a kid. He supposed he should protect her, too.

Alien Contact for Kid Sisters

Fleeing murderous rebels, the queen’s sister finds a hero to save her.
Or is he kidnapping her, instead?

Marianne is sick of being just the kid sister of the famous queen of Kwadra Island. Although she daydreams about being a warrior, when rebels bomb the royal ball she’s shunted to one of the many tunnels that honeycomb Kwadra, where she awaits a captain of the valiant Royal Guardians.

Quinn, a scam artist fleeing the police, dons the uniform of a Royal Guardian killed by a tunnel collapse. When Marianne mistakes him for her bodyguard, Quinn can’t decide whether to save the feisty maiden, fall in love with her—or kidnap her. With bloodthirsty rebels pursuing them and a treasure map in his pocket, what will he choose?

Poor Quinn, having to think about the long term–like tomorrow or the next day, lol. I like him a lot!

    1. He’d never make it as an author, though, with this mindset.

  2. He’s really a softie underneath…

    1. Oh, absolutely . . . but his crust and his heart will be in conflict for a couple hundred more pages.

  3. The kids books are quite interesting. Sounds like he’s in for an interesting time

    1. I like to think it’s pretty interesting.

  4. Mind going at full speed sound pretty appropriate for the current times.

    1. Agreed! You keep safe, Daryl.

  5. This sounds like a really fun read. I love Quinn’s inner thought, so on point. Great snippet.

    1. Wearing the Royal Guardian uniform is inspiring him to be a better man — but will it last? And what will happen to those good intentions when Marianne discovers his deception?

Glad he decided to protect the girl with the vicious boots too. I loved that consideration. Thanks for sharing!.

  7. I’m glad he decided to protect the girl with the vicious boots. I loved that consideration. LOL

    1. I’m not sure he really had a choice, but yes, it speaks well of him. More than once, Elfy and Marriane will gang up on poor(?) Quinn.

  8. Quinn must surprise himself at times like wanting to protect a child now too. Guess he got over the “boots” from last time. Ouch.

    1. It’s the uniform. He’s secretly always wanted to be a gallant Royal Guardian, and now that he’s wearing the uniform (taken off a dead man), he pictures himself as gallant and heroic. Don’t worry, it’ll wear off.
